Enterprises, government and educational institutions have once again started placing large orders for laptops, tablets and desktops, as a part of reversing the covid-induced work-from-home trend.

As long as offices were shut the share of the commercial/business segment in the overall personal computer (PC) market remained decreased than the consumer segment throughout the most of this year; however this is set to change. Next year, the industrial phase is anticipated to dominate the PC markets, whereas the client demand might experience a slowdown compared to the current year.

Ashweej Aithal, research analyst, Canalys says, “Most segments picked up very quickly after the pandemic, except a few like the education and government sector. With major schools and colleges opening, we expect the first half of 2022 to have more traction in the education and government sector.”

Sudhir Goyal, Chief Business Officer, Acer India says, “In 2022, we will see growth in the business sector. With large backlog orders finally being sent, we saw a healthy shipment growth of 47.6 percent per annum in the third quarter.”

Goyal mainly points out enterprises, especially IT and IT-enabled services (ITES) companies, continued to buy to meet the growing workforce stuck at home. Demands from small businesses (SMBs) to digitize their operations also boosted the growth of the business segment.

India shipped a record 5.3 million PCs in the September quarter, an annual growth of 34 percent, according to a report by market research firm Canalis. This included 3.5 million laptops and 1.2 million tablets. Demand for desktop PCs also grew by 29 percent during the quarter, selling 0.6 million desktop PCs.

According to Cyber media Research (CMR), tablet shipments in India grew by 116 percent in the September quarter and Lenovo led the market with a 27 percent share. The company also acquired a 27 percent market share in the PC segment, based on large commercial orders, which outperformed HP’s No. 1. 1 before and now has 24 percent market share.

“We also see the contribution of government and public sector undertakings (PSUs) in 2022, with the government focusing on growth in the Indian economy and infrastructure and education. We expect huge growth in these sectors in 2022,” Goyal adds.
