Taiwanese electronic products manufacturer, Foxconn is discussing with the Center to bring in its electric battery swapping infrastructure to India, while increasing sales of electric vehicles across urban metropolises.

About a couple of weeks ago, Foxconn along with a few government officials held a forum of executing the market entry either with Taiwanese battery refueling platform Gogoro, or individually.

According to reports, they are in thoughts to execute the same through their partnership with Gogoro first, which is what they have done in Taiwan, Indonesia, China, and some other markets as well. The same they intend for India as well.

Similarly, Hero MotoCorp and Gogoro announced a strategic partnership to establish a battery swapping joint venture to bring Gogoro’s battery swapping platform to India last year.

However, reports say that Foxconn is bent on entering India’s battery swapping infrastructure regardless of the government-mandated dimensions that do not match with Gogoro’s infrastructure executed elsewhere

This year, the official think tank Niti Aayog came up with a draft battery swapping policy contemplating interoperability across EV brands, standard battery pack specifications, business models for service providers, and incentives for companies setting up the infrastructure.

Likewise, reports said that Foxconn is waiting for regulatory clarity, since it believes that the government’s say on the dimensions for the battery packs would determine whether it can continue its partnership with Gogoro in India.

Meanwhile, the Center is yet to release the final battery swapping policy.

However, reports say that Foxconn is bent on entering India’s battery swapping infrastructure regardless of the government-mandated dimensions that do not match with Gogoro’s infrastructure executed elsewhere.

According to the Center’s investment promotion agency Invest India and Nomura Research, as the second-largest two-wheeler and largest three-wheeler producer globally, India presents one of the largest target markets for battery swapping.
