US technology giant Google voiced concerns on the design, membership, and operation of a self-regulated grievance appellate committee (GAC) proposed by Twitter, Meta Inc., the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), and social networking platform Facebook.

The self-regulatory GAC's fundamental design and planned membership have been the subject of several preliminary talks between the three companies and the consumer internet industry organization IAMAI during the past several days.

IAMAI's recommendations were backed by Meta and Twitter, but Google said that a self-regulatory GAC may compel companies to alter their own policies regarding how they manage content on their platforms.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology was contacted by the social media intermediaries and IAMAI, requesting more time to implement the self-regulatory GAC.

Google is said to be considering all possibilities and is eager to collaborate with interested parties to find a possible solution

The suggestion was for a self-regulatory GAC to be led by either a retired chief justice or a judge of the Supreme Court or one of the high courts, according to the negotiations that had taken place between the three mediators and IAMAI.

After the government declared it would be open to an industry-regulated group as long as the organization complied with all of its regulations and standards, the idea of a self-regulatory GAC was put out.

Although the government has not yet finalized the proposed GAC's composition, the panel would consist of additional distinguished individuals and unaffiliated specialists in the fields of technology and policy in addition to the government-appointed member.

According to reports, Google had held a preliminary meeting and was actively in conversation with both government and industry representatives.

Google is said to be considering all possibilities and is eager to collaborate with interested parties to find a possible solution.
