Corporation Founder and Chief Scientist Sridhar Vembu mentioned that the information technology (IT) sector is not generating numerous new jobs as investments are being redirected to cover the increasing expenses of artificial intelligence (AI) and data center infrastructure.

In a post on social media platform X, Vembu highlighted that although the IT sector, including Zoho, has steered clear of major layoffs, it has not created considerable new job opportunities in recent years.

"The funds that were intended for new hires are now allocated to AI and data center expenses, primarily because of the significant increase in server and memory costs," Vembu stated.

He mentioned that although the company is working to handle these costs, numerous elements still lie outside their influence.

Vembu challenged the necessity for heightened software development in the present landscape. "Although AI enables faster software production, does the oversaturated global software market really require much more software?" he inquired.

He remarked that similar to any commodity sector, the emphasis is moving towards quality, dependability, and branding, resulting in "significantly slower" growth.

The founder of Zoho also noted that enterprise clients are shifting their IT expenditures towards AI. He voiced doubt about the financial returns for AI firms that are presently borrowing and investing significantly in capital expenditure .

Vembu stated, "It is uncertain whether they will attain the enormous profits required to warrant all the capital expenditures."

Regarding the wider topic of employment, he voiced skepticism that manufacturing could "fill the gap," pointing out that significant automation leads to large manufacturing sectors generating minimal jobs.

Vembu noted that although innovative technology reduces production costs and makes products cheaper, it poses a fundamental issue for the economy related to the distribution of income.

"The sole inquiry is how the economy is organized to ensure individuals have the earnings to purchase those affordable items," he stated, noting that although the question appears straightforward in theory, it proves challenging in execution.

He also observed that some consider Universal Basic Income (UBI) a remedy, highlighting that aspects of this are already apparent in India through "freebies."

Vembu proposed that political pressure to broaden these initiatives will probably grow as the issue of employing the country's youth continues in an unpredictable global environment.
