Karnataka to Launch State-Level AI Mission, Says Minister Priyank Kharge

Karnataka is considering the establishment of a state-specific artificial intelligence (AI) initiative, as stated by Priyank Kharge, the state's electronics and information technology minister.
This comes at a time when both the world and the state, known for having the highest number of engineers nationwide, are facing the dual challenges posed by AI's effects on the workforce and the intricate global landscape of AI regulation.
The minister noted that regulating a swiftly evolving technology like AI presents challenges, as it is utilized across multiple fields. While there are positive applications, concerns remain regarding issues such as deepfakes and AI-generated financial scams.
“It's quite challenging to declare that I will regulate AI at this moment, given the widespread adoption of generative AI," Priyank explained, emphasizing the necessity for a nuanced perspective that acknowledges both the advantages and drawbacks involved.
The Karnataka government is currently assessing whether to integrate this initiative within the forthcoming Karnataka IT policy for 2025-2030 or to develop a separate framework, with Kharge mentioning that input has been gathered from stakeholders and think tanks.
