Micron's Gujarat Chip Plant to Begin Production by February End

US memory chip manufacturer Micron Technology plans to kick off commercial semiconductor production at its $2.75 billion site in Gujarat's Sanand by the end of February, according to Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw.

He noted that pilot production has already started at various authorized semiconductor plants, with commercial production to commence shortly.

Discussing India's semiconductor initiatives, Vaishnaw stated that the nation has established a definite and future-oriented strategy. He pointed out that India’s goals encompass advanced technologies, transitioning from 28-nanometer to 7-nanometer, then to 3-nanometer, and finally to 2-nanometer nodes.

While participating in the WEF, he mentioned that the critical minerals value chain is intricate and necessitates collaboration across various stages, such as processing and refining. He emphasized that global partnership is crucial to maintain stable and robust supply chains. India has established collaborations with Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Australia, Europe, and the United States in this field.

He also mentioned that there was significant international trust in India. He pointed out that conversations at the forum underscored India's growth narrative, highlighting ongoing interest from international leaders in collaborating with India in areas like infrastructure, technology, manufacturing, logistics, and emerging sectors.

Vaishnaw mentioned that Maersk is collaborating with India to enhance logistics infrastructure in shipping, ports, and railways, and is also involved in semiconductor materials

Teo Chee Hean, Chairman of Singapore’s Temasek, showed interest in increasing investments in India, particularly in physical and digital infrastructure and deep-tech startups. Experts in artificial intelligence, robotics, and cybersecurity also emphasized India's increasing position as a reliable value-chain collaborator.

Vaishnaw mentioned that Maersk is collaborating with India to enhance logistics infrastructure in shipping, ports, and railways, and is also involved in semiconductor materials. Honeywell, on the other hand, is collaborating with India on modernizing railways and has expressed a desire to grow its manufacturing presence.

He additionally encountered Demis Hassabis from Google DeepMind and Chris Lehane from OpenAI to explore India’s contribution to influencing artificial intelligence for the benefit of the world. He asked them to participate in the AI Impact Summit set to take place in New Delhi in February.
