NLC India Ltd is preparing a Rs 37,000 crore investment initiative in Odisha, centered around a planned thermal power plant and a mineral processing facility for beach sand, along with intentions to investigate a coal gasification project aimed at fertiliser manufacturing.

The Navratna central public sector enterprise intends to allocate Rs 35,000 crore for a 3,200 megawatt (Mw) ultra-supercritical thermal power plant and Rs 2,000 crore for a beach sand mineral processing plant in the state.

The suggested investments arise as the government-owned mining and energy company broadens its coal extraction and electricity production ventures. NLC India is currently constructing a 2,400 Mw thermal power station associated with its Talabira coal mines in western Odisha and has obtained extra coal blocks that may aid its upcoming activities.

The suggested thermal power station would consist of four units, each with 800 Mw capacity. NLC India anticipates that the project will create jobs for approximately 4,000 individuals. The mineral processing plant for beach sand is anticipated to generate an additional 500 jobs.

"The Talabira power plant is currently under construction." This 3,200 mw ultra-supercritical thermal power facility is being proposed alongside the Talabira plant. "Details regarding the location and land are in an advanced phase of completion," stated a company executive.

NLC India's current Talabira initiative includes three 800 Mw units and has a projected investment of approximately Rs 27,213 crore. In January 2024, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd was granted the engineering, procurement, and construction contract for the project by the company. The facility is connected to the Talabira II and III open-pit coal mines, which possess a total yearly production capability of 20 million tonnes.
