OpenAI in Talks With TCS to Begin Stargate India Chapter
OpenAI is currently engaged in advanced discussions with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the largest exporter of software services in India, regarding the development of artificial intelligence compute infrastructure within the country as per reports.
Reports suggest that both companies are poised to collaborate on creating sophisticated AI solutions for businesses, with the potential partnership representing the commencement of OpenAI's "Stargate India" initiative and supporting TCS's ambitions to establish itself as the premier AI-led services provider globally.

In September, it was indicated that the leading AI firm had initiated preparations for the Indian segment of Stargate, involving interactions with the government and negotiations with Reliance Industries.
Despite the initial talks with Reliance reaching an impasse, the conglomerate solidified its connections with established allies like Meta and Google to establish an IGW compute hub in Jamnagar, Gujarat, along with enhancing its AI service portfolio.
The San Francisco-based company is reportedly considering a plan to lease a minimum of 500 MW of data center capacity from HyperVault, the newly established data center division of TCS, in order to train and operate its AI models in India.
At the same time, the two companies are also exploring opportunities to collaborate on AI solutions for major corporations in various industries such as banking, retail, consumer goods, and manufacturing, utilizing cutting-edge GPT large language models.

In response to government regulations promoting data localization, OpenAI has introduced options for local data storage in key Asian markets like India, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea.
As per the report, a group of senior leaders from TCS is presently in the US to finalize the partnership agreement and commercial terms, with an official announcement anticipated by the end of the year.
Nevertheless, it was mentioned in the report that OpenAI is not considering investing in TCS's HyperVault at the moment. The Tata group is not interested in reducing their stake or relying too heavily on a single customer like OpenAI, and they aim to expand their services to companies like Anthropic. An investment in equity from one could lead to concerns about conflicting interests.

In addition to the artificial intelligence hardware, the partnership between TCS and OpenAI will play a crucial role in TCS's goal of transitioning to a next-generation computing powerhouse. The key components of this strategy involve developing comprehensive solutions, strengthening partnerships within the ecosystem, improving the skills of its worldwide staff, and transforming delivery methods through the use of AI agents. The possible collaboration between TCS and OpenAI, Reliance, and Google is happening as India becomes increasingly important in the worldwide artificial intelligence field.
A study by Nasscom and BCG predicts that India's AI market will see significant growth, reaching $17-22 billion by 2027, due to advancements in technology, increased investments in startups, and a growing community of developers.
