The homegrown messaging platform Arattai, supported by Zoho, is set to receive a significant update featuring end-to-end encryption, which is scheduled for deployment, as stated by founder Sridhar Vembu in a social media announcement.

Vembu said many more "cool features" on Arattai are in the works once "this big transition" is through.

"Please update the Arattai app from the Play Store/App Store and please encourage your contacts to do so. The end-to-end encryption will be enabled Tuesday night IST," Vembu said in a post on X.

Vembu mentioned that numerous additional "cool features" for Arattai are being developed and will be introduced following the completion of "this big transition."

"If you are on the latest Arattai version and your contact is on the latest version, you will only be able to use end-to-end encrypted chat with that contact," he said.

He clarified that users will only be able to send end-to-end encrypted messages if both they and their contacts are utilizing the most recent version of Arattai.

Vembu said many more "cool features" on Arattai are in the works once "this big transition" is through.

"So you cannot continue the old chat session with any contact who is in the end-to-end encrypted version of the app. The old chat screen will simply redirect you to the end-to-end chat screen," he elaborated.

In instances where both parties are on the latest version, a new end-to-end chat session will be initiated for that contact, while the previous non-end-to-end encrypted chat session will be archived.

Essentially, these three days represent a transitional period.

Group chats currently lack end-to-end encryption, but Vembu has assured that this feature will be implemented in the coming weeks for groups of specific sizes.

"End to end encrypted chats will get a backup option in about two weeks," he added.

A few months ago, Arattai captured attention due to fervent appeals from ministers, founders, and CEOs to adopt the made-in-India messaging application, which led to a surge in daily sign-ups and extensive sharing and invitations across social media platforms, including, ironically, various WhatsApp groups.
