Reuters and AP to the Rescue of Misinformation onTwitter

Twitter is partnering with news organizations The Associated Press (AP) and Reuters to whisk improvements to enhance credible and timely information within the user timelines and curb the spread of false narratives on its platform.

AP and Reuters, which are also partners with another social media giant, Facebook for its fact checks, Twitter believe it will be able to accelerate and scale adding information to tweets and elsewhere on the platform.

The new partnerships will coincide with Twitter's contextual explainers, which are currently seen through search, trends, exploration, and specific highlights and prompt during major events.

Both news organizations will help Twitter’s curation team to be able to access real-time updates as they emerge around key conversations through established and vetted sources while assisting the social media giant’s team to provide context on topics that are fetching interests and help prevent misleading information.

the social media giant will offer an extra amount of reliability to its listings and help its curator to stay on board with the latest issues the latest information.

Meanwhile, the social media giant will be able to relish the same sources used by both news organizations which stay on top of the latest news.

The social media giant’s curation team will use the partnered organizations' expertise to not only provide more context across news and trends on the social media giant’s platform, but will also be able to use high visibility events, misinformation labels, and more.

Currently, the curation team is focused on adding additional information to the social media giant’s 'Top Trends' and 'Explore Tab'.

When particular keywords or hashtags are searched for on Twitter, the team is also involved in how certain search results are ordered to guarantee that material from high-quality searches appears at the top of search results.

The team also looks into prompts that appear in the Explore tab on the Home timeline for important events such as public health emergencies, such as the pandemic for instance, or other events such as elections.

They also assist with the misinformation labels that appear on tweets that are allowed to remain public on Twitter but have been labeled with informative context from reliable sources. Tweets that break Twitter's rules on manipulated media, election integrity, or COVID-19 are examples.

Additionally, the social media giant will offer an extra amount of reliability to its listings and help its curator to stay on board with the latest issues the latest information.

The team, however, is distinct from Twitter's Trust and Safety team, which evaluates when tweets break Twitter's guidelines and disciplinary action, such as removal or bans, is necessary. Twitter stated that neither the AP nor Reuters will be involved in such decisions.
