Sigma Advanced Systems Secures Rs.1, 013 Crore Global Order
Sigma Advanced Systems obtained a $104.9 million, approximately Rs.1,013 crore, export contract from a North American client to produce and deliver 147,000 next-generation 155 mm base bleed artillery shell bodies, the firm announced in an exchange filing. The agreement will be carried out in the upcoming six to twelve months.
The defence manufacturer located in Hyderabad announced that the order signifies its transition into more sophisticated artillery ammunition following earlier contracts for 155 mm fuzes and M107 artillery shell casings.
The new initiative is anticipated to enhance the firm's revenue and EBITDA margins, while bolstering its reputation as a long-term worldwide defense provider.
Base bleed technology tackles a fundamental issue in artillery: aerodynamic drag at the back of a shell during flight, which reduces its range.

Base bleed rounds incorporate a gas-generating device at the projectile's base that ignites during its flight, filling the low-pressure area behind the shell and minimizing drag.
Producers claim this could enhance range by around 15-30 percent compared to traditional shells, while still being compatible with current 155 mm howitzers in use, offering a cost-effective means for armed forces to extend the capabilities of their existing artillery.
