Tata Motors Ltd., plans to bring in premium and technologically advanced electric vehicles (EVs) into India’s market, while it attempts to maintain its leadership amid intensifying competition.

Shailesh Chandra, managing director, Tata Motors passenger vehicles and Tata passenger electric mobility, said the upcoming electric mid-sized sport-utility vehicle (SUV) concept Curvv will have a range of 400-500 km, significantly more than Tata's current Nexon electric SUV, which has a range of just over 300 km.

The new electric SUV design is based on Tata Motors' current internal combustion engine platform, indicating the automaker's intention to produce more EV-first vehicles in the future.

As of March, EVs accounted for about eight percent of Tata Motors' total vehicle sales. With the removal of impediments to EV adoption, such as enhanced charging infrastructure, the carmaker anticipates this percentage to expand to 20-25 percent in the next four to five years.

While the Curvv EV is still two years away from commercial production, and it is said the business aims to unveil other EV models in the next months

Tata Motors' EV sales increased 353 percent to 19,106 vehicles in FY22, giving it an 80 percent market share, according to the firm. Even while market leader Maruti Suzuki India Ltd aims to deliver an electric car only in 2024, competitors like MG Motor India Pvt. Ltd and Hyundai Motor India Ltd's EV products are situated in the premium-end of the market.

Tata Motors announced last year that it would launch 10 EV in India over the next five years. This covers current Nexon and Tigor EVs, as well as EVs based on the second-generation design shown with the Curvv and a pure EV constructed on a full-EV platform.

While the Curvv EV is still two years away from commercial production, and it is said the business aims to unveil other EV models in the next months, all of which will be built on the new architecture, which delivers faster performance and a longer driving range.

Tata Motors has said that two of these products will be announced later this month.
