Tata Power has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from the Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd (SECI) to supply 324 MW of electricity from its 1,000 MW Bhivpuri Pumped Hydro Storage Project (PSP) in Maharashtra, strengthening its position in India's fast-growing energy storage sector.

The award was granted under SECI's tariff-based global competitive bidding process for developing 1,500 MW/12,000 MWh of pumped hydro storage capacity across the country.

Tata Power secured the project through an electronic reverse auction and has signed a 40-year Pumped Storage Purchase (PSP) agreement. The project is expected to be commissioned by 2029.

The Bhivpuri project will be developed under the Build, Own, Operate (BOO) model and will provide eight hours of energy storage, enabling reliable electricity supply during peak demand periods.

It will be connected to the 765/400 kV South Kalamb Central Transmission Utility (CTU) substation through the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS), ensuring seamless integration with the national grid.

Pumped hydro storage plays a crucial role in balancing the grid by storing surplus electricity generated from renewable sources such as solar and wind during periods of low demand and supplying it when consumption peaks, thereby improving grid stability and renewable energy integration.

The latest award aligns with Tata Power's broader clean energy strategy and its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2045.
