The Chennai facility aims to support AI labs, foundation model creators, AI-driven startups, businesses, and research as well as academic institutions. It will assist in training large language models and foundation models, fine-tuning, and high-throughput inference. The rollout establishes a possible infrastructure foundation for enterprise AI initiatives, encompassing workload deployment, model optimization, cloud migration, and managed services for Indian channel partners.

The Chennai supercluster will utilize AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs, which feature 288GB of HBM3E memory and a memory bandwidth of 8TB/s. The specifications aim to meet the challenging computational and memory needs of progressively intricate AI models. J.J. Kardwell, CEO of Vultr, states that organizations implementing AI on a large scale require local infrastructure to meet data sovereignty, data residency, and latency needs.

According to Kardwell, the Chennai deployment will enable organizations in India to train, refine models, and perform inference on infrastructure situated within the nation. The declaration does not reveal the quantity of GPUs intended for Chennai, the associated investment, the anticipated start date, or if the mentioned 20 MW pertains to IT load or total facility power. The announcement similarly does not mention any customers that have agreed to utilize the facility. This information will assist in assessing the degree of capacity accessible to clients and the speed at which companies and service providers can develop workloads on the infrastructure.

The Chennai supercluster contributes to the movement toward AI infrastructure that is geographically distributed, positioning compute nearer to the locations where data is created and applications are utilized.

The Chennai deployment enhances Vultr's partnership with AMD within its AI infrastructure and cloud computing offerings. The partnership between the companies includes AMD Instinct MI300X, MI325X, and MI355X GPUs, along with the anticipated use of MI455X GPUs and AMD Helios rack-scale AI architecture. Vultr announces its intention to expand capacity further in 2027, featuring MI455X GPUs and the Helios architecture. The announcement does not indicate where that capacity will be utilized or verify that these technologies will be set up in Chennai.

The upcoming supercluster will likewise utilize AMD ROCm, the firm's open software framework for GPU computing. ROCm offers access to AI frameworks, libraries, and models, enabling developers enhanced flexibility in constructing and launching AI tasks. Jaya Jagadish, country head and SVP Engineering at AMD India, mentions that access to such large-scale computing can assist Indian researchers, startups, and enterprises in transforming AI concepts into practical applications. She also emphasizes ROCm’s importance in providing developers with greater options in developing and deploying AI.
