
Wipro GE Healthcare Opens Greenfield Medical Devices Factory

Wipro GE Healthcare has opened new medical devices manufacturing plant in Bengaluru, built under the government’s production linked incentive (PLI) scheme.
The Greenfield facility, built in a record time of less than one year, with an investment of Rs. 100 crore, is GE Healthcare's fourth manufacturing plant in India.
Ranging across 35,000 sq. ft., the plant will be manufacturing CT machines, cath lab equipment, ultrasound scanners, patient monitoring solutions, ECG machines and ventilators. It has a workforce of 35 at its shop floor which is expected to increase to 100 in the next two-three years.
The company said it will start commercial roll-out of the products from the facility from today. Initially, the factory will serve the local market, followed by exports at later stages. With the latest addition, GE Healthcare operates four manufacturing plants, three of which are joint ventures with Wipro and one with state-owned BEL.

India imports 75-80 percent of the medical devices it consumes. To cut down on imports and make India an export hub, the government launched the PLI scheme for medical devices. Wipro GE is among fifteen companies selected for sops under the PLI. Imaging devices made by GE will be eligible for PLI incentives. The government will be offering five percent incentive on incremental sales or up to a maximum of Rs. 121 crore per applicant per target segment.
