In essence, Google has collaborated with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to enable users to authenticate their identity for routine applications through verifiable credentials securely stored within the Wallet.

To provide some background, Google Wallet is a mobile application designed to enable you to store and utilize digital equivalents of commonplace items directly on your smartphone, eliminating the need to carry physical objects.

It has the capacity to store details such as debit and credit card information for transactions, as well as travel passes, cinema tickets, and other similar items. In India, Google Wallet now accommodates Aadhaar verifiable credentials.

Consequently, users can digitally store their Aadhaar information on their devices for identity verification purposes. This feature enables individuals to authenticate their identity for routine situations without the need to disclose complete personal details.

As highlighted on the Google blog, this enhancement permits users to conveniently store and utilize digital IDs directly on their smartphones, thereby diminishing the necessity to carry tangible documents.

For instance, individuals have the capability to authenticate their age when reserving cinema tickets, authenticate profiles on platforms such as BharatMatrimony, or automatically populate necessary information for visa applications using services like Atlys. Furthermore, applications such as verifying visitors in residential communities are feasible as well.

Google announced that the system is designed with privacy as a fundamental element, employing selective disclosure to transmit solely the necessary information during the verification process. Rather than revealing complete Aadhaar numbers, services receive digitally signed credentials that are customized to particular use cases, like age verification for ticket purchases or identity confirmation at healthcare institutions, thereby granting users enhanced control over their personal information.

In addition to India, Google is enhancing its digital ID capabilities for users in Singapore, Taiwan, and Brazil. In these areas, individuals have the opportunity to generate ID passes utilizing their passport details, which can then be stored securely in Google Wallet.

These digital ID passes can be employed for verification purposes online as well as for face-to-face identity confirmations, such as accessing services or verifying identity when necessary.
