Koo, a homegrown microblogging network, has become the first Indian social media site to make its compliance report public, in accordance with the new Information Technology (IT) guidelines.

This comes as Koo's competitor, Twitter, is embroiled in a legal battle with the government over the (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, which took effect on May 25.

Google also released its transparency report, revealing that it received 27,762 specific user complaints for content removal.

According to the Bengaluru-based microblogging service, out of the 5,502 Koo reported by the Community, 22.7 percent (1,253) were removed, while the remaining 4,249.

Similarly, Koo took assertive measures to modify 54,235 Koos, of which 2.2 percent (1,996) were eliminated and the remaining 52,239 were subjected to various measures. Overlay, blur, ignore, warn, and other actions are among the options for Koos that do not comply with government rules, according to the company.

“As Koo grows in popularity across India, we'll make sure it abides by the law and meets the standards, allowing each country to build its own digital environment. One step in that direction is our Compliance Report”, Aprayameya Radhakrishna, Founder and CEO, Koo.

“We are proud to be the first social media platform to publish a Compliance Report as part of Koo's ongoing efforts to make social media a safer place and provide transparency for users. Koo's Founder & CEO, Aprayameya Radhakrishna, stated, "We will continue to make efforts to create social media a secure place for all users".

The union ministry of electronics and information technology has directed all major social media intermediaries to appoint a Chief compliance officer, nodal officer for faster user complaints redress as well as ensuring action on requests made by government law enforcement agencies when any content is found to violate the laws of the land, under the new IT rules.

Earlier the Indian microblogging platform raised $ 30 million in a series B fundraising round sponsored by Tiger Global.

Notably, the money raising coincides with the adoption of new IT intermediary legislation, which will raise social media companies like Twitter and Facebook's accountability and scrutiny. Koo has roughly 60 lakh subscribers under the new criterion, making it a major social media intermediary.
