Tata Electronics to Begin Semiconductor Chip Packaging in Assam
Tata Electronics is set to commence semiconductor packaging operations for global automotive and industrial clients at its new OSAT (outsourced semiconductor assembly and test) facility in Jagiroad, Assam, a step anticipated to bolster India's efforts to establish itself as a global semiconductor manufacturing center.
The firm has begun limited commercial shipments from its initial OSAT unit in Vemagal, Karnataka.

Reports indicate that industry sources have mentioned a shift in focus toward the extensive greenfield project underway in Assam.
The approach focuses on highlighting Tata Electronics’ production strengths to international customers while quickly increasing output to satisfy rising demand from the automotive and industrial industries.
The organization has chosen to use a minor part of the Assam project before it is completely finished to expedite qualification and operational preparedness. The installation of equipment and validation of processes are occurring in stages to ensure the facility can seamlessly shift to large-scale manufacturing by year-end.
The Jagiroad semiconductor project, worth Rs 27,120 crore, will feature close to one million square feet of cleanroom area. Although the production lines at the Karnataka facility will persist, some of the operations are anticipated to be duplicated in Assam.

A group from Vemagal is expected to move to Jagiroad by the month's end to manage the transfer of technology and manufacturing.

Recently, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the location and conveyed contentment with the advancements made collaboratively by the state administration and project teams. In a post on X, Sarma announced that semiconductor manufacturing at the Assam facility would commence shortly and referred to it as a significant achievement for both Assam and India's semiconductor goals.

The Chief Minister stated that the Jagiroad facility will be able to produce as many as 48 million chips daily for industries such as automotive, telecommunications, consumer electronics, and AI-based technologies.
On May 16, Tata Electronics entered into a memorandum of understanding with Dutch chip equipment producer ASML for lithography systems, deemed essential for India's inaugural semiconductor fabrication ecosystem.
